Artist Portraits is an ongoing series of tender pencil and ink studies on watercolour paper of the faces, and importantly, the hands of a selection of international female artists, whose lives and work resonate in Alice Herrick’s own life and art practice.
The series is Alice Herrick’s response to the discourse around an increasing number of female artists being finally recognised in galleries and museums, as she reshapes her own view of art history and contemporary art.
Configured around eyes and hands, an artist’s closest and most vital instruments, Alice Herrick pays homage to those who have inspired and trail blazed past and present, forging a devotional practice of study and exploration that in turn has been a journey of affirmation, discovery and revelation.
All works are pencil and Indian ink on deckle edged 300gsm acid free watercolour paper, 297x210mm
To date there are 116 portraits in the series, of which 110 are featured, in order of birth, on a beautiful silk scarf. Following exhibitions of the portraits at The Stash Gallery in 2022 & 2023, many of the scarves are now adorning collectors across the country.
